CATHERINE'S POV

When Halloween was gone, Charlie and I focused all our free time on finding Steve. He had to be nearby so S.H.I.E.L.D. could have an eye on him, but it could not be an obvious place either. We had tried to break into their servers, but their firewalls were strong and very encrypted, especially if we did not know what exactly we were looking for. We had gone to this country concert in Chicago and those few hours away from the institute were enough to make us come up with new ideas on how to retrieve information about Steve's whereabouts. As the days went by, we had tried everything, but still, we have not found anything about it. We were fixing all the last details for the Thanksgiving dinner for tomorrow, when suddenly a last resource to find Steve hit me. I took my phone and texted Charlotte, who was checking the information we had once again. "Joint tracking rune." As I pressed sent, the same text got into my phone.

Five seconds later, Charlie got in the meeting room and her face showed the exact same surprise that I had. "Dude." She said, still not believing it. "I know." I replied with a confused smile. "How didn't we think this earlier?" We both shook our heads not really knowing why. "Okay. How do we do this?" Charlie nodded to her room and I followed. "First, we need something that belonged to him." I nodded and started thinking how to get something from to him. "The rune is drawn on the back of the hand of the tracker, while gripping the object in the other hand. If we do it while connected, the outcome will be faster and more precisely." Her words came to me with relief as I did not know how to draw that rune. "I will draw it, but we need to find something from him to track." We were bummed by that specific thing. We did not know if S.H.I.E.L.D had anything from him in the headquarters.

"The museum!" I whispered and Charlie did not take another second opening a portal to D.C. Fortunately, we could do the tracking without actually taking the item with us. We were using our invisibility rune to avoid prying eyes, we have come too far to back up now. As I held the uniform on one hand, she held my free hand and drew the rune. The essence was barely there, which made it harder to track him down. "I see a cabin." She said in a whisper and I started seeing it too. "There's water around." I added and Charlie hummed. "I got it." We both said. "You got it?" We asked each other again. "Dude." We laughed after that and broke the connection. "We should go and talk to him." Charlie suggested when we were back in the institute and I nodded. "Cath, Jace needs you in his office." Clary interrupted and I nodded. "Go. I'll text you whenever I'm free." Charlie just looked at me, suddenly she was scared of go alone.

"He knows you and you promised him that you'd find him." Just then, Charlie sighed and nodded. As she opened a portal and went away, I walked to Jace's office. "How's my favorite exchange soldier?" I giggled and sat in front of him. "How's Charlie?" His question threw me off. "Am I here to talk about the bond? Because we still don't handle it too well. There had been way too many emotions and panic attacks." He smiled and shook his head. "No. I just wanted to know how things were going with you. I hear there were a few issues with a few soldiers." I chuckled and talked to him about the mood swings we have been experiencing and how we were handling it. "But mainly, she's a mess because of you." I told him already regretting my words. He raised his brows and closed the folder he was checking. Me and my big mouth, but for once I was tired of his mean words to my parabatai. "What?" That single word scared me, but I just had to come forward now.

"Your opinion about her choices." Jace lowered his head and sighed. "I really need to start thinking before speaking." I just nodded and waited for him to look up once again. "Indeed. Because you will only push her away and you two are too cute to be fighting for something so stupid." He sighed and he never looked up, which made me think that his regret was not real.
