CATHERINE'S POV

Evelyn was so cryptic sometimes, but I decided to not pay attention to her last words and just focus on having breakfast with my friends. Evelyn had taught me that being a Shadowhunter meant you had to compartmentalize your emotions and do your job, but since Charlie got here, we all had done everything but that. We finished our breakfast and Charlie and I went to train, she seemed rested and very awake. It seemed like being away let her upgrade her own energy and I was happy for that. After training, we got ready to go out and to my non surprise, Leon and Evelyn joined us. As we were waiting for the dessert, Charlie put a really nice bag on the table and pushed it to me. "These things are from our dear friend Tony, he wished he could be here, but he was too busy fighting bad guys." I hugged her and thanked her in a whisper, we both knew that Tony was scared of Evelyn, so he usually avoided places where she was on.

"You know he loves you either way." She whispered to my mind and that made me giggle. I had taught her well. I opened the bag and found two boxes. I opened the smaller one first and found a beautiful silver sunglasses. It had a Stark engraving so that meant Tony's technology was present but as Evelyn was present, I decided to not ask about it. The second box was a bit bigger and when I opened it, I almost cried. It was a very modern Stark cellphone. My very own Stark cellphone. I turned it on and captured a perfect picture with my favorite people and upload it to my Instagram account. Tony loved my reaction as Charlie had been recording it. Classic move of hers. Once the shock was over, we kept talking and after a while, Charlotte slid a beautiful tiny box in front of me. "It might not be the greatest thing, but it made me think of you, so I hope you like it." She added, almost ashamed of being sentimental about it.

Or maybe it was nervousness, which made me wonder what she probably had gotten me to be like that. I went to hug her again and I opened the box and I sat down as my eyes filled with tears. In the short amount of time we have met, she got me the most thoughtful present and I did not know how I had been so lucky to find a friend like her. "I know this means a lot to you, so I did my best to get it for you." She explained and Evelyn had the confused face on. "She got me my family ring." I blurted out as I took the ring off the box. As I was about to slide it on my finger, I saw some letters on the inside of the ring. "For the world you're an Ashdown, but for me you're a Verlac." That was when I realized that the A could be a V and I just went to hug her once again. "Thank you." I whispered and she just giggled. "You're very welcome." Leon and Evelyn's presents were more practical to my own life within the Shadow World and I was thankful for them being amazing to me.

We kept enjoying our lunch and then we returned to the institute, where we were taken to the technological room. As I was absorbed in the screens of surveillance, Leon was checking the last demon-interactions with mundanes and Charlotte was too busy reading some stuff on her laptop. "What are you doing?" I talked to her directly to her mind. She jumped and I chuckled at her. "You okay?" Leon asked and she just nodded. "I'm reading about Sebastian's files. There's something weird, but I can't quite put a finger on it." Her words sounded worried and I did not know how to get closer to her and help her without making Leon aware of something off. We were friends, but talking about Sebastian was still a touchy subject. Suddenly, the alarm went off and quickly enough Charlotte closed her laptop as Leon and I ran to the meetings room. "There has been a huge breakout over the south of London.

Each one of you is going on surveillance. So, pick your team and get ready." Evelyn's words sounded rehearsed or maybe she was just tired. I looked over Catherine and we both walked to the armory room. As everyone got their blades, bows and weapons, we did a quick reading on the incident and we planned our possible scenarios. We could not just go and fight demons blindly.
