CHARLOTTE'S POV

As we would be working for Tony now, we could not just portal ourselves to the building, so we had half an hour to commute and then, my day started again. Luckily, weekends were empty for us, which was really good as I had to figure out a few things yet. Mainly related to Steve and my life in New York. We were about to finish our surveillance shift in the institute, when an explosion caught my attention. It was in the Chinese theater in Los Angeles and it seemed very unlikely to be a terrorist attack, so we dug up a bit more and I almost had a heart attack when I saw the injured manifest. Happy Hogan was there, meaning Tony could have been there. As soon as I calmed down, we texted Danny, the guy from the institute from Los Angeles that we had met on my year off. He was in charge of the investigation and said that the projection of the explosion was a bit weird so he would keep investigating and would tell us whatever he found.

"We're always involved in something that happens out there. Like trouble always sucks us in." Cath added after a while and I sighed. It was true and I did not know how to feel about those thoughts. She was right though. If it was not something related to the Clave or the Circle, we had a revolt somewhere or aliens decided to invade Earth or someone attacked the Avengers, we just could not get away from all that. We went to sleep, because we knew we would have a long investigation, starting for Tony. We fell asleep and by morning, the institute was upside down. "What happened?" I asked and Leon hesitated before sighing. "Tony Stark threatened the guy who supposedly ordered the explosion." Cath gave me the look and I just walked to the technological room. We both started investigating and by afternoon we caught an alienate helicopter going around Tony's mansion in Malibu.

It was a live feed of the security cameras and it was too late when the helicopter shot the first mini missile. We secured our office and opened a portal to Tony's house. The hours passed by and almost two days after the attack, we decided to leave that place as there was not any sign of Tony. As the first responders kept digging the house searching for him, Cath and I tried to find Pepper, but she was nowhere to be found either; which in a moment like this could only mean, that she had been taken by someone and we had last seen her with that unknown lady from the footage before the explosion. Using the sunglasses, we used JARVIS to get a name. She was a biologist and hooked up with Tony ages ago. Now, the thing was, why had she come back? Why did she take Pepper? She had this vibe that I did not like. And yet, my thoughts went back to where Tony was. J.A.R.V.I.S. kept saying that he was alive, but we could not get a hold on his location.

So, we would worry for Pepper, even if that meant to miss Christmas. As I realized I would miss Christmas, I took my phone and wrote a text to Steve that I would miss it. After I sent it, I realized that I should not have done that. We were not together anymore. I activated my focus rune, otherwise I would end up crying for all the emotions I was feeling right then. We got to the hotel Pepper had allegedly checked into, but by the time we were there, she was gone and the other woman was gone too. We noticed a few blood drops and we knew the unknown lady had taken her, but by the force used, she was not working alone. I crunched down to touch the blood and I got a few images of Pepper being injected and I started freaking out. Cath activated my bravery rune and we contacted Danny to give us everything he had on the explosion as we asked JARVIS the list of people visiting STARK Industries before the disappearance of Tony and Pepper.

We eventually got to the one person that we assumed hated Tony enough to do this. Aldrich Killian. He had gotten into Tony's radar at the same time as the biologist, with the difference that unlike Tony, she accepted working with him and they had created a serum to regenerate limbs. Thing is, they experimented on people; the bad thing was that it made you explode.
