When I was younger
I saw my daddy cry
And curse at the wind
He broke his own heart
And I watched
As he tried to reassemble it

I watched from the corner of the room as my father mumbled to himself before punching the wall. There was multiple bottles littering the table, dishes over flowing from the sink, and papers littering the floor. It had been like this ever since mom left.

I made a little sound as he punched the wall again, harder this time.

He turned to me, tears filling his eyes as he broke down, "Oh honey, I'm so sorry. I'll do better. I promise, I'll do better."

And my momma swore
That she would never let herself forget
And that was the day that I promised
I'd never sing of love
If it does not exist, but darlin'

My mom paced back and forth, "I should've never trusted him! I should've listened to my parents." She turned to me, grabbing my shoulders with a wild look in her eye, "Promise me you won't make the same mistakes as me. Promise me!"

My eyes widened and I nodded and she let go of me, going back to her pacing.

You are, the only exception
You are, the only exception
You are, the only exception
You are, the only exception

I walked out of the skate shop, new board tucked underneath my arm as I accidentally ran into someone.

"I'm sorry." I mumbled, looking up to the handsomest man I've ever seen. He had bleached hair that's almost grey, a sharp jawline, and piercing blue eyes.

"It's alright." He said in a low, semi-rough voice.

My eyes flicked down to his arm which was covered in a tattoo of his skeleton halfway up his forearm. I smirked as we walked past each other, that's a pretty cool tattoo.

Maybe I know, somewhere
Deep in my soul
That love never lasts
And we've got to find other ways
To make it alone
Or keep a straight face

I walked into the living room of my apartment, my best friend spread out on my couch, watching something on the tv.

My eyes narrowed at the figures on the screen, they were hitting each other inside a ring. I sat down in the floor, lifting the bowl of popcorn up for Ethan to take, "What're we watching?"

"Wrestling."

I watched for a minute before realizing why we was watching wrestling, "You just wanna see their asses in those bikini looking bottoms!"

Ethan laughed before shrugging, "Maybe I do. You can't blame me. I mean look at those muscular bodies." He watched with rapt attention and I just shook my head before returning my attention to the tv.

Where I saw a familiar face. At least I'm pretty sure it's the same dude, I can't really tell since half of his face was painted like a skull. Which was cool.

I focused in on his arm where I saw the ending of the skeleton tattoo. I pointed at the tv, "That's him! That's dude I ran into at the skate shop! The hot one!"

"You mean to tell me you ran into Darby Allin and you didn't even know who he was?!"

I shrugged, my face coloring red, "I don't watch wrestling. To me he was just some random dude who I'd never see again."

And I've always lived like this
Keeping a comfortable distance
And up until now
I had sworn to myself that I'm content
With loneliness

I walked out of the skate shop again, this time with new wheels since my others had cracked. I thought I had paid good attention at where I was going but apparently not since I ran into someone. Again.

"Sorry." I said before looking up at a familiar face.

His lips quirked up at the corner, "It's you again. Do you always make it a habit to run into people?"

"I... you..." I started spluttering and my cheeks heated up, "You're him! Darby Allin!"

He raised an eyebrow and I shook my head, "Forget I said anything. I'm sorry." I turned to leave but he stopped me.

"Hey! Do you have a name?"

I turned back to him, "Hayley."

Because none of it was ever worth the risk

I laughed as Darby, his real name is Samuel but I prefer calling him Darby, tried to skate down a standing ladder. I've given up on trying to check on him whenever he inevitably falls off his board.

He fell once again and looked up at me laughing with a grin, "Think that's funny? I want to see you try this."

I shook my head, "I can barely do a kickflip, you really think I'd try to do that?"

He got up, board in hand as he climbed up the ladder again, "Don't worry, I'll teach you."

But you are the only exception
You are, the only exception
You are, the only exception
You are, the only exception

"So you've been hanging out with Darby a lot." Ethan said as we sat in a little diner.

I shrugged, "Yeah. He's fun to be around." I nudged Ethan with my shoulder, "Not as fun as you obviously."

Ethan gave me a quick smile before looking back down at his milkshake, "Are you sure about this Hayley? You're slipping."

I didn't even have to question what he was talking about before sighing, "I like him Ethan, I really like him." I wrapped my arms around me, "And that scares me."

I've got a tight grip on reality
But I can't let go of what's in front of me here
I know you're leaving in the morning, when you wake up
Leave me with some kind of proof it's not a dream, oh

I gasped as I woke up, my chest heaving up and down from my dream. Nightmare really.

"Hayley?" His low voice was filled with sleep as Darby patted the bed for me, "Hayley what's wrong?"

I took in a deep breath before letting it out, "I dreamt you left me. You just up and left me without so much as a goodbye."

Darby scooted closer to me before wrapping his arms around me, pulling me into his hard chest, "I won't leave you. I promise you, I will never leave you."

You are, the only exception
You are, the only exception
You are, the only exception
You are, the only exception

You are, the only exception
You are, the only exception
You are, the only exception
You are, the only exception

And I'm on my way to believing
Oh, and I'm on my way to believing.

I sighed and closed my eyes again, "I won't leave you either."
