I sighed as I stepped out of the school building, my eyes automatically squinting from the sunlight that seemed blinding after being in a building for so long. I had just finished my last exam of my last year of high school and there was a certain weight that felt lifted. I finally felt like there was going to be a life for me after graduating high school. For the longest time it had felt like school would be never ending after spending the majority of my life in it. But now there was a lightness that I had never felt before. It felt great.
As I walked throughout the city to get back to my shabby apartment I shared with my mom, I could feel sweat running down my back, plastering my school uniform to my back. It had turned hot and muggy so quickly this summer and I hated it. It doesn't even get cool during the nights. All day and night, it was hot and the AC in the school was broken too. There was no escape from the heat.
As I walked inside the apartment, all the lights were off. I sighed as I took off my shoes, changing into slippers before going through the small apartment. I had no clue where my mother was. It seemed she was gone most of the time. I couldn't even remember when the last time I saw her was. Who knows what she was doing.
I went about my business of fixing some instant noodles before finally settling in front of the small box tv that only got three channels. It was going to be a long night.

I tossed and turned, trying to sleep but it wasn't working. It was just too damn hot to sleep. So I got up and went outside where there was a slight breeze. It wasn't much but the breeze felt nice after the assault from the heat all day.
I started walking, not exactly sure where I was going. I knew I probably shouldn't be outside at night, especially since I'm quirkless but this felt better than struggling to sleep.
As I turned down a dark alley, a shortcut to a nearby 24-hour convenience store, I heard shuffling and grunts. It sounded like someone was fighting. Just as I was about to turn around to leave, they came into my view, one of them locking eyes with me.
I felt frozen as the one I accidentally locked eyes with suddenly grinned, and I felt terror run through me. He was insane. This man was insane. I could see it in his eyes.
I let out a squeak as I took a hesitant step back. Something sharp came towards me and I let out a scream as I tried to run away but couldn't.
Something wrapped around my leg, tripping me and started dragging me back towards the crazy man and whoever he was fighting. I couldn't even try to struggle. I felt helpless.
"Hey! Your fight is with me!" I heard someone growl out and suddenly the grip on my leg lessened as screams echoed in the alley.
I turned to see what happened and watched as someone placed a flaming hand on the crazy guy's face. The flames were bright blue and illuminated their user's face perfectly.
His blue eyes glinted with a kind of humor as he melted the face of the guy beneath him. Is that burns covering his face? Is his face held together with staples?
The screams of the man eventually died down as his lifeless body slumped forward, his face charred to unrecognition.
The flame user didn't even bother glancing at me as he turned to leave and I gave a start, realizing that I wasn't going to die today.
"Th-thank you!" I hesitantly called out. I knew I shouldn't say anything and just laid low but he did me a huge service even if he didn't mean to.
The man stopped before glancing back at me. "I didn't do it for you."
"I know. But it still helped me out. So thank you." I just witness a murder right in front of me and instead of calling the cops, I'm thanking the murderer. Maybe there's something wrong with me too.
