So.
The movie Brave. One of my favorites. I never knew why I loved the fact Merida had no love interest and why I loved how she like did that thing during the archer match where she said "I'll be shooting for my own hand" like that made me excited.
Now I know I love that part and the No love interest part bc like it's an aromatic/ aroace moment.
2 things though. I was watching a TikTok clip of the movie bc it came up on my for you page and it was the scene like right after she won the match so she wouldn't have to marry anyone and her mom was all mad saying she ruined everything and Merida says "this whole marriage is what you want did you ever bother to ask what I want"
Right. Iconic moment.
Someone in the comments was like oh she's such a lesbian. Like...there was not another girl in that movie she had interest in. Like I get if she had loads of chemistry with a girl sure but she didn't. Merida is for the aroaces.
So someone replied to them like just because a woman doesn't wanna be with a man doesn't automatically make her lesbian and the person said that's what a lesbian is and I'm like...yes but no. Like yes. But lesbian isn't the only option.
And then someone else basically said she was a child and had no interest in romantic relationships.
Like she is old enough to have interest, but she just doesn't that doesn't make her a child. Like yes I think she's under 18 and technically a child but like she's not childish for not having a romantic interest. So yea. Those are my two rants. Don't have the energy to go further into it but I feel like this always happens. Someone says they don't like the opposite gender and they automatically assume they're gay/lesbian. I get wanting representation badly and I can be guilty of automatically assuming a character is aro/ace but some of these characters don't just say "I don't like boys" or "I don't like girls" they're talking about romance in general.
Like my character from my WIP No Regrets doesn't talk about not liking boys romantically she talks about not understanding or liking the concept of romance in general. (I really hope she can be good aromantic and/or aroace rep. Reggie too but he's more ambivalent/indifferent to romance and doesn't talk about it as much as Rue. He more so talks about how important his friends are to him and Rue has some good quotes about not understanding why romance is seen as better) basically long story short, I hope non all my books I release I have a good variety of characters on the a spectrum. Starting with Rue and Reggie.
Anyways that's all thank you so much for listening, wishing you all the very best! Have a wonderful day, take care 💚💜
