I saw this post on insta by I.put.the.ace.in.disgrace and I wanna talk about it.
I don't know of a lot of aroace, ace, aro, or agender people in media that are canon. I no zero agender characters and I know a few aro/ace characters but they aren't main characters like Issac from Heartstopper. Heartstoper is mainly MLM representation (I haven't seen season 2 yet but I think there's more Issac aro rep in it but I'm not really a fan of romance so I'm not gonna watch heartstoper since it's a romance show but Issac will probably go down as a aromantic icon) and then that guy from bojack horsemen (his name is Todd isn't it?) who is ace. And then there are Aled, Georgia, and Sunil, all book characters of the creator of Heartstopper who are aspec.
That's about it. I mean I know there's headcanons of other characters being aro and or ace and probably agender too but it's so little represented and actually canon. I need more of it.
And I'm willing to bet that if there was more representation more people would identify as aro and or ace. Before I knew aromantic was a thing I made up crushes based on who I though was funny and the least annoying and it was almost always someone I knew and have spoken too. I didn't know it was an option to not have a crush or not feel romantic attraction but if I saw aromantic characters on tv that I related to I would have found out I'm aro way sooner.
I'm currently working on a short story to post on here with an aroace main character and I want to become an author some day and every single on if my books will have an aro and or ace character, some will be main characters some will be supporting characters but they will be there.
Because I think it's important to highlight different forms of love. Not every story needs romance or a prince with a happily ever after attached. Not everyone who wants to experience a deep connecting love wants it to be romantic.
In my personal opinion the most beautiful love story is a love story about a found family. It doesn't get much better than that.
Also friendly reminder if your favorite show was canceled (*cough cough* I hate you netflix *cough*) and your character wasn't proven to NOT be aro/ace or aroace you can just pretend it's canon that they are aro/ace or aroace because there's no other seasons to disprove it. Who knows? Maybe they would have came out as aromantic or discovered they were ace in the season they decided to cancel. But now you get to decide!
