The Fuchsia City Pokémon Gym. Yesterday, I'd be excited to get in here! Now...I'm a little nervous. The first time I was in a long time.
Elaine was right by me when she sensed me tensing up.
Elaine: Don't worry about yesterday. Do what you do best, and aim for your goal.
I nodded to Elaine as I stepped up to face the Gym Leader...who wasn't there for some reason.
After a minute, I turned and jumped at the sight of the Gym Leader!
Koga: Nice to see you. My name is Koga. I am Fuchsia City's Poison-type Gym Leader. I am ready to accept your challenge.
I nodded.
Koga walked to his end of the field and sent out his only Pokémon: a Venomoth!
I decided for Pikachu to battle.
Koga: Venomoth, Toxic!
Venomoth fired a poisonous liquid from its wings at Pikachu!
Cameron: Dodge and use Agility!
Pikachu dodged the attack and ran in circles, raising its speed.
Koga: Psychic!
Cameron: Thunderbolt!
Pikachu fired the Thunderbolt before Venomoth could attack, but it used Psychic to block the attack!
Cameron: Iron Tail!
Pikachu hardened its tail and swooped down for a downward attack!
Koga: Protect!
Venomoth protected itself from Iron Tail!
Pikachu was recoiled to my side of the field.
Koga: Use Bug Buzz!
Venomoth vibrated its wings, creating a damaging sound!
Pikachu retaliated by charging up, firing electricity up above, hitting Venomoth with a thunder strike!
Elaine: Pikachu learned Thunder!
Cameron: Cool!
Koga: Venomoth, Toxic!
The Toxic managed to hit Pikachu this time, leaving it badly poisoned.
Cameron: Thunderbolt!
Pikachu fired a Thunderbolt!
Koga: Protect!
Venomoth protected itself!
I needed to outsmart Koga somehow...
I noticed that Pikachu is fast, but Venomoth is a fast attacker. I needed to outsmart its attacks.
Cameron: Use Quick Attack!
Pikachu ran from side to side!
Koga: Protect!
Venomoth used Protect again, but...
Cameron: To the right!
Koga: Catch it with Psychic!
Venomoth attempted to subdue Pikachu with Psychic. Once Pikachu was grabbed...
Koga: Pull it close!
Venomoth pulled Pikachu in for a finishing blow!
Cameron: Thunder!
Pikachu created a thundercloud and struck Venomoth with a bolt of thunder.
Venomoth got paralyzed!
Cameron: Finish it with Iron Tail!
Tired from the poison, but able to keep going, Pikachu finished Venomoth with Iron Tail!
Pikachu fainted from fatigue!
I picked up my partner as Koga walked to me.
Koga: Cameron, that was one impressive battle we had there. You've officially earned the Soul Badge!
I took my fifth badge and thanked Koga for the battle.
As we exited the Gym...
Elaine: I knew you could do it.
I nodded at her compliment, with a bit more meaning.
After a short minute of silence, Elaine gave me a quick hug.
I was surprised again, but I saw she was embarrassed, so I held her hand for a short second to thank her.
Cameron: Thanks for cheering me up. It means a lot.
Elaine cheekily looked away as she got flustered even further.
Cameron: Ready to keep going?
Elaine: Yeah. Let's go...
As we made it to the west exit of Fuchsia City after leaving Kangaskhan at the Safari Zone...
Elaine: Cameron, you should see this...
Elaine showed me a headline on the news: Team Rocket has sieged Saffron City.
Cameron: Not good.
