On the Octopod, there are some things people just don't want to do, but everyone has special ways to choose who will do it.
For example, when the Captain asked someone to watch the kids and Kwazii (for obvious reasons), the Captain will think of a number, and whoever guesses farthest from that number has to watch the kids and Kwazii.
Usually, if someone has to be chosen for an undesirable task, they'll first talk it out somewhat rationally, and then it descends into absolute chaos.
When Professor Inkling asked everyone if anyone would like to have a cup of herbal seaweed tea and read with him for a while, no one wanted to. After rationally discussing it for a while the kids decided not to make Squirt do it cos he already had to suffer boredom at Inkling's hands enough, but that was where rationality stopped.
They cannot draw names out of a hat because the last time they tried to see who would be on a double night watch (cos Kwazii was sick), the Captain sneakily threw everyone else's name into the trash can and pulled his own name out of the thing so his "children" would be able to sleep that night.
Everyone got suspicious as to why the Captain refused to draw again to see who his buddy would be, and then the Vegimals brought the trash can with all the names inside, and everyone took turns scolding/yelling at the Captain for it.
He ended up being the one forced to go to bed while Dashi and Shellington took turns on the night watch.
Whenever the adults don't want to do something, Peso will always meekly suggest he do it, but then the other adults refuse to let him cos he's too sweet and they don't want to inconveiniece him
