Gryffindor Common Room

The door to the common room opened, and Harry walked in holding a broomstick. Ron saw him and quickly approached with a big smile.

Ron: They gave it back! Amazing! Can I take it for a spin tomorrow?

Harry: Sure! – He said, super excited. – We need to make up with Hermione. After all, she was just trying to help.

Ron: Yeah, she's probably in the library, as usual.

After ten minutes, all the Gryffindor students were gathered in the common room, and the Firebolt was passed around, admired by everyone. When the crowd thinned out, they saw Hermione sitting off to the side, still studying. She was the only one who hadn't come over. Both Harry and Ron walked up to her, making her look up from her book.

Harry: They gave it back! – He said, smiling and showing her the broomstick.

Ron: See, Hermione? There was nothing wrong with it.

Hermione: Yes... but there could have been. At least now we know it's safe.

Harry: Yeah, I guess so. I'd better put it away.

Ron: I'll take it upstairs. I need to give Scabbers his tonic anyway. – He said, grabbing the broomstick and heading toward the boys' dormitory.

Harry: Mind if I sit down?

Hermione: I guess not. – She said, moving some books and scrolls off the sofa.

Harry: How are you managing all of this? – He asked.

Hermione: Oh, well... you know, working hard. – She said, and Harry noticed she looked almost as tired as Lupin.

Harry: Why don't you drop a few subjects? – He asked, watching her search for a runes dictionary among her books.

Hermione: I couldn't possibly! – She replied, looking exhausted.

Harry: Arithmancy looks awful. – He commented, picking up a complicated numerical chart.

Hermione: Oh, no, it's wonderful! – She said seriously. – It's my favorite subject!

Harry couldn't understand what was so wonderful about Arithmancy. At that moment, a strangled scream echoed from the boys' dormitory stairs. Everyone in the room froze, staring at the staircase. Then they heard the quick footsteps of Ron growing louder... until he appeared, dragging a bedsheet.

Ron: LOOK! – He shouted in Hermione's face. – LOOK! – He repeated, shaking the sheet at her.

Harry: Ron, what is... – But he couldn't finish because Ron interrupted.

Ron: SCABBERS! – He yelled.

Hermione's face was full of confusion. Harry glanced at the sheet Ron was holding. There was something red on it. Something that looked horribly like...

Ron: BLOOD! – He shouted, and silence fell over the room. – HE'S GONE! AND YOU KNOW WHAT WAS ON THE FLOOR?

Hermione: N... no – She replied in a trembling voice. Ron threw something onto Hermione's rune translation. She and Harry leaned over to see. On top of the strange, spiky characters were long, ginger-colored cat hairs.

Hermione froze when she understood what that meant, but then she remembered that Crookshanks wasn't in the common room.

Hermione: When was the last time you saw Scabbers? – She asked.

Ron: This morning.

Hermione: Then Crookshanks is innocent. – She said calmly.

Ron: HE'S GUILTY! – Ron yelled furiously.
