Feast

Night fell as the train arrived at the Hogsmeade station. All the students from second to seventh year disembarked and climbed into carriages that would take them to the castle. Sasuke got into a carriage with Luna, Zacharias, Daphne, and Astoria.

Daphne continued to talk about everything she knew regarding Professor Horace Slughorn.

Daphne: Sasuke, you should apologize to Professor Slughorn. He's someone with many connections.

Sasuke: I'm not going to apologize to that sycophant. He only invited me and those other students because we have something to offer in return for his attention.

Astoria: But Mom and Dad said he's a great pioneer and that the parties and gatherings he held were attended only by Hogwarts' elite.

Sasuke: Were your parents members or did they attend those events?

Daphne: No, but they said the parties he organized were legendary.

Sasuke: That's nonsense. I don't plan to waste my time on that. But aside from that, what did you mean by him being a great pioneer?

Astoria: He was a great pioneer at Hogwarts. Dad said that years ago he taught Potions.

Sasuke: Potions...

Luna: What's special about Professor Slughorn teaching Potions?

Sasuke: Now it all makes sense.

Zacharias: What do you mean?

Sasuke: Can't you see? He wants to return to his former glory; he wants to hold those legendary gatherings and parties again. And now that he's back at Hogwarts, he wants to reclaim his old position.

Astoria: But Professor Snape is the Potions professor.

Sasuke: But if Slughorn takes over the Potions class, there will be a position available for Professor Snape.

The others thought for a moment until they finally understood.

Zacharias: Defense Against the Dark Arts. Everyone knows Professor Snape has always wanted that position.

Sasuke: It looks like we'll finally have a competent professor since Professor Lupin, because the others were a disaster.

Everyone thought about Lockhart and Umbridge.

Upon arriving at the castle, everyone went to their respective tables while waiting for the first-year students to arrive for the Sorting Ceremony.

After the Sorting, Dumbledore stood up to make the annual speech.

Dumbledore: I must remind students that items from Zonko's and the new products from Weasley's Wizard Wheezes are prohibited.

Dumbledore: We are very pleased to welcome a new member to our faculty, Professor Horace Slughorn, who is an old friend of mine and has kindly agreed to return to the position of Potions Master.

These words caused the Great Hall to fill with murmurs from the students, who wondered if they had heard correctly.

Dumbledore: Professor Snape—he said, raising his voice to silence the murmurs—will assume the position of Defense Against the Dark Arts professor.

The murmurs returned, now at a louder pitch, almost as if they were shouting. Finally, Snape had the position he had long desired.

The only table that applauded the news was the Slytherin table.

Dumbledore: Now, as everyone present knows, Voldemort and his followers are once again gaining strength.

Dumbledore: I cannot emphasize enough how dangerous the current situation is, and that everyone must be very careful and not leave the castle under any circumstances.

Dumbledore: The castle's protections were reinforced during the summer, but we must still be scrupulous to avoid any carelessness from any student or member of the faculty.

After the speech, everyone went to their respective common rooms.

As Sasuke entered the Great Hall, he noticed many students stopped talking as soon as they saw him. He ignored them and went to his room.

When Dumbledore's speech began, Draco was not paying attention; he was contemplating whom he should trust moving forward. Most of his housemates had family members who were Death Eaters. He needed to continue acting as if he were fine, for any of the students might be a spy for the Dark Lord.

Upon arriving at the common room, he heard discussions about Death Eater attacks in magical communities. He also overheard several seventh-year students saying they planned to join the Death Eaters after Hogwarts.

He noticed a small group of students who were more isolated from the others, murmuring among themselves.

Feeling disheartened at the thought of socializing, he bid farewell and went to his room.

Once in his room, he grabbed a book on Dark Magic that he had taken from the Malfoy family vault in Gringotts. The book contained various details about numerous curses, as well as detailed discussions of the Cruciatus Curse and Avada Kedavra.

Draco: I need to become stronger to avenge my father.
