Entry 990
Thursday 13th June 2019Its been a lovely day.
Me and Nikki finished most of the unpacking and were talking about how we might decorate some of the rooms and arrange the furniture. I know the island is doing well with food supplies, but I don't know if they have any painting or decorating equipment, so we might just have to make do with the rooms as they are. I think they're fine but Nikki's got specific ideas about how she wants them to look.
Nikki and I took Leo for a walk on the beach this morning. It was lovely. The weather was great and listening to the waves as we walked along the sandy beach felt great. The sandy beach here is much better than the stony beach in Cowes.
In the afternoon, the three of us went for a walk around Sandown. Our house is really close to the beach and really close to the centre of Sandown. It's a lovely little town. The promenade is called the Esplanade. Nikki, Leo and I took a leisurely walk down the Esplanade. Just like Cowes, a lot of buildings were boarded up; an abandoned milkshake bar, a forgotten surf shop and several B&Bs with windows and doors boarded up. There was a huge Premier Inn that was halfway through being built and had clearly been abandoned once the outbreak hit. Maybe the GRID builders should focus on finishing off the Premier Inn, rather than building these bl**dy stupid walls around the towns. As we continued walking down the Esplanade, I saw the pier in the distance. It was all locked and boarded up but there was a café opposite it called The Beach Café, and next to it was a burger van. It had a picture of Del Boy on the side from Only Fools and Horses, and the writing on the front of the burger van said 'Only Foods and Sauces'. Funny. I ate a burger. It was lovely. You can't beat a burger from a proper burger van. We went inside the Beach Café and had a cup of tea. "Maybe this is where me and Cyn could come for our catch ups," I said, "It's quite nice in here, and there's more room in here than there is in Sails Café in Cowes." "God," said Nikki, rolling her eyes. "What?" I asked. "Cyn," said Nikki, "Cyn, Cyn, Cyn, Cyn, Cyn. It's all you ever talk about." "No, it's not," I said, with a bit of a chuckle in my voice, "I..." "You calling me a liar?" snapped Nikki. "No," I said, "I'm just disagreeing with you. Let's not fall out. You know me and Cyn have agreed to keep meeting up. I'm just saying this might be a nice place to do it." "Well, it would be nice if you spoke about me sometimes," said Nikki. "OK," I said, with a smile on my face, "You look absolutely gorgeous and I, you and Leo are going to be REALLY happy here." Nikki smiled and held my hand.
Just behind The Beach Café is the High Street. Again, lots of buildings are boarded up, but there's a Sainsbury's there that's very similar to the one in Cowes. I guess that'll be where Nikki and I do our shopping.
No one from GRID has been to see us. I'm not that bothered but I'm going to need a job, not just to keep me busy, but also so I can contribute. I know Blade has got his hands full with finishing off the walls around the town, but I can't imagine he'll be happy letting me live the life of Riley here in Sandown without a job.
I'm sitting here in my lovely living room writing my diary and looking over at the walkie talkie. There's no one I can radio to have a chat with. The walkie talkie signal won't reach from Sandown to Cowes, and Nikki and I don't know anyone here in Sandown yet. I suppose we should think about going out to meet people and make some new friends. It's so nice to see Leo playing happily. I really do think the three of us will be happy here. I guess I should think about introducing Leo to some others kids so he can start to make friends. Lots of work still to do, but we're going to be so, so happy here.
