Entry 962
Thursday 16th May 2019What a day! I'm feeling better physically, but after a heated confrontation with Natasha and waking up to discover an unexpected person in my living room, I wish I'd stayed in bl**dy bed.
The day started when I got up, felt better, had a wash and then went downstairs. First of all I walked into the kitchen and made myself a cup of tea and just as I was about to exit the kitchen and make my way into the living room, Mum appeared, standing in front of me with a stern and unimpressed look on her face. "What?" I asked. Mum stepped aside, said nothing and with the same expression of dissatisfaction on her face, simply pointed towards the living room. I frowned with confusion and with my tea in my hand, I walked into the living room and was slightly taken aback when I saw who was sitting on the sofa. "What the Hell are you doing here?" I said. It Was Auntie Meryl. She was on the sofa with her coat on, and her suitcase by her feet. "They've chucked me out," said Auntie Meryl, "Cheeky b*ggers. I kill two of those ugly monsters and they evict me. Me! A woman of my age!" "What do you mean they've chucked you out?" I said, "Why would they chuck you out? What have you done?" "Well, that's bl**dy charming isn't it?" snapped Auntie Meryl, "I'm made homeless and you say it's my fault. Ever heard of victim blaming!?" "Some GRID soldiers just dropped her off," said Mum. "Dropped me off!?" exclaimed Auntie Meryl, "Dropped me off!? What do you mean 'dropped me off'? I'm not a package you've just bought off The eBay." "eBay," I said. "Yeah," said Auntie Meryl. "No, it's eBay, not The eBay," I said. "Oh whatever," said Auntie Meryl, "The eBay, The Amazon, The Facebook; it's all the same thing. The point is, I'm not a package that just gets dropped off." "I asked the GRID fella why they were bringing her here and they said we should listen out for Blade's announcement." Coincidentally, at that moment, Blade's voice was heard emanating from the public address system. "Oh," said Mum, "Talk of the devil." "Ladies and gentleman," Blade announced, as his voice echoed across the island, "This is Commander Jon Blade, head of safety and security for The Global Response to International Disaster. I am sure you are all aware that there was an outbreak of the E-Virus earlier this week on Monday 13th May in the special quarantined area of Newport. I am sure many of you have questions, and I am making this announcement to provide clarity and answer questions where I can. After conducting an investigation into this matter, reports, statements and autopsies to date show that an elderly man was the first person to become infected. It seems the gentleman in question; 75-year-old Barry Irons was alone in the park, where it appears he suffered a fatal heart attack which caused him to succumb to the infection. Once Mr Irons turned into an infected, he proceeded to attack passers-by and the infection quickly spread. Thankfully the outbreak was contained to the quarantined area in Newport meaning it did not spread to the other habited areas of the island. It is with great sadness that I must report the outbreak claimed the lives of 196 individuals; 23 who were GRID soldiers. Of the 196 casualties, 164 have died and 32 remain in an infected state in The Hive. Of the 32 infected that have been transported to The Hive. Six infected people are classed as SAVERS and 26 infected are classed as FATALS." As Blade shared details about the numbers, I grabbed a pad and a pen and started writing down what he was saying. "I would like to thank my team for dealing with the outbreak in a swift and efficient manner, and for effectively evacuating residents from other areas of the island down into the emergency bunkers," continued Blade, "Unfortunately due to the tragic deaths of GRID soldiers, this leaves us with a staff shortage meaning that that with immediate effect, the quarantined section of Newport is now closed and no longer in operation. All former residents of the quarantined area of Newport are, as we speak, being transported to other habited areas of the island, namely Cowes, Newport, Sandown and Ryde. All other areas of the island will remain uninhabitable. Starting tomorrow a wall will be built around each of the four habitable areas, similar to the wall that surrounds The Hive. This will increase safety and security, and ensure any outbreaks are contained within local areas. Residents will still be able to drive to and from habitable areas of the island, and armed GRID soldiers will be posted at checkpoints on areas of the wall that act as entrances and exits from each area." Blade carried on talking about being safe and looking after each other and then stopped.
