Entry 991
Friday 14th June 2019Me and Sci-Fi Cyn met up at The Beach Café opposite the boarded-up pier in Sandown today. It was nice to see her.
"So, how are you settling in?" she asked. "Yeah, not bad," I said, "Nikki is nesting like mad. She's good with Leo." "So, you're not missing Cowes?" asked Sci-Fi Cyn. "God, no," I said, "I suppose you're the only person I bother with now. I'll go and see Mum, and I might pop in to see Roz, Richard and Madeline but everyone else gets on my nerves. Me and Nikki are going to be really happy here. The beach is great and the house is so amazing." "I'm happy for you," said Sci-Fi Cyn, "This café is nice too. Lots of space. More room to move in here than there is in Sails Café. Have you been given a new job yet?" "No," I said, frowning with confusion, "I'm surprised." "Well, he has got a lot on his plate," said Sci-Fi Cyn. "He's always got something on his plate," I bluntly said, rolling my eyes. "Luke, he does have a stressful job," said Sci-Fy Cyn. "Yeah, I know," I said, "But he hasn't made life easier for himself, has he? He should never have listened to Natasha's stupid QCUC proposals. He should have taken charge and put his foot down." A bit like you should have done with Nikki?" said Sci-Fi Cyn. I slowly raised my head, slurped my tea and gave Sci-Fi Cyn a confused and angry look. "You what?" I firmly said. "Oh, forget it," said Sci-Fi Cyn, "It doesn't matter." "No," I firmly said, "I won't forget it. What do you mean? If you've got something to say then say it." Sci-Fi Cyn gave a defeated sigh. "OK," she said, "I just think – and bear in mind this is only my opinion, that Nikki talks to you like cr*p sometimes and... well... you let her." "She doesn't talk to me like cr*p at all," I exclaimed, "Yeah OK we bicker a bit and we might disagree with each other every now and then, and she occasionally gets a bit... emotional, I suppose you could say, but we have a lot more good times together than we do bad times." "Luke, you really don't have to explain yourself to me," said Sci-Fi Cyn. "Well, don't say sh*t like that then," I said. "I just think it's... odd that you're saying Jon should put his foot down with Natasha, when you don't put your foot down with Nikki," said Sci-Fi Cyn. "Cyn, they are two COMPLETELY different situations," I exclaimed, "Blade NEEDS to put his foot down with Natasha. I don't NEED to put my foot down with Nikki. Have you seen Blade recently? Last time I saw him he looked like sh*t. Not very happy at all. I don't think he can cope. I don't look like sh*t and that's because I'm happy. Nikki makes me happy. It's pretty obvious Natasha does NOT make Blade happy." "I suppose I feel a bit protective of Jon," said Sci-Fi Cyn, "We do work together, and he has a lot of stress. It's not my job to comment on yours and Nikki's relationship. But Jon isn't the only one I feel protective of. I feel protective towards you too. Mamma Bear will always want to look after the Wriggly Worm." "You haven't called me that in ages," I said, "Anyway, you don't need to worry about me. I'm not a kid, you know." "I know," said Sci-Fi Cyn, "I just don't like seeing people talk to you like cr*p – whoever they are." "Yeah, well Nikki doesn't speak to me like cr*p," I said, "I bet Natasha speaks to Blade like cr*p. I think he's losing his grip. I'm starting to think these walls will never get finished." "They'll get finished," said Sci-Fi Cyn, "Overseeing a project that involves the building of big, high, thick walls around four areas of an island isn't a quick job, and what with us losing soldiers in the Newport outbreak, we don't have the staff that we used to."
Sci-Fi Cyn and I started talking about other stuff, but I was really surprised to hear her saying all this sh*t about Nikki. Talk about making a mountain out of a molehill and over exaggerating. Nikki might lose her temper every now and then, and snap at me and say things she doesn't mean, but everyone does that. It's normal to bicker a bit in relationships and disagree. God – me and Caroline were always arguing and shouting and screaming at each other. I suppose I should feel glad that Sci-Fi Cyn feels protective of me and is looking out for me, but when it comes to me and Nikki there's no need for anyone to worry.
All of the boxes are unpacked, and I think we are more or less settled into our new home. It really is a lovely house. Not the house I would have been able to afford before the outbreak. There's a great garden out back, and I can imagine me and Leo playing in that together when we're older. The house is just great! An amazing power shower, big built-in wardrobes in our bedroom that has a sea view, a lovely kitchen diner, a spacious living room. It's brilliant!
Still no news from GRID about what my new job is. Maybe I don't have a new job. Maybe they've forgotten about me. Perhaps I should contact them and tell them I'm keen to get a job and get back to work. I want to start earning and looking after my family. I love this house, but boredom might set in soon and I'm going to need to start earning some credits if we want to start enjoying our life here in Sandown.
