Entry 1020
Saturday 13th July 2019Well, we're all out of the bunker now and Blade has addressed us all via the island's public address system, so we now know what all the drama was about yesterday. I'm still in Cowes, but I've seen Nikki and I'm moving back to Sandown tomorrow.
I woke up after having a very uncomfortable night's sleep on one of the single beds in the bunker. The GRID soldiers went from bed to bed handing everyone someone sort of ugly-looking basic breakfast in a bland looking brown paper bag. "What the f*ck is this?" said Trudy. "It's breakfast isn't it?" I said. "Breakfast?" said Trudy, "Look at the state of it. It'll look like that when I sh*t it out." "Just eat it and shut up," I said.
Once we'd eaten our horrible looking morning meal, Blade's voice sounded over the island's public address system. "Ladies and gentlemen," Blade announced as his voice echoed throughout the bunker, "This is Commander Jon Blade, head of safety and security at The Global Response to International Disaster. I hope you all managed to get some sleep within the emergency bunkers. Now I know you all have lots of questions and would like to know what's going on. I am making this public address to update you all." "About f*cking time," snapped Trudy. "Shut up," I said, "Let the man speak. We can't hear him with you squawking like a parrot." Blade continued his public address. "It is with deep regret," he continued, "That around 4am yesterday a number of gas leaks caused multiple explosions within the district of Ryde on the North East of the island. It is with deep sadness that I regret to inform you that the entire population of Ryde has been killed." There was a huge collective gasp throughout the bunker. I felt a cold shiver run down my spine. I looked at Roz and some of the others as we exchanged looks of shock with our mouths wide open. We just couldn't believe what we were hearing. "I know this news will come as a huge shock to you all," continued Blade, "At this point we do not know what caused the gas explosions, but my team and I are conducting a thorough investigation. We will leave no stone unturned in trying to get to the bottom of this. Sadly no one has survived the explosions. The entire population of Ryde are either dead or infected. Some were killed instantly by the numerous blasts, but the overwhelming majority have become infected and will be placed in The Hive in the hope that one day a cure will be developed. At this point we do not know how many people have become infected, but we anticipate it will be around thirteen thousand people, taking the population of the island down to approximately 32,000 uninfected people. We do not know at this point which infected individuals are classed as SAVERS and which are classed as FATALS. This information will be confirmed shortly, but I can confirm that the infected of Ryde are currently being transported to The Hive. Once they are secured in The Hive you will all be able to safely exit the bunkers and return to your lives. I am sure many of you will have friends and loved ones who have sadly lost their lives in the Ryde incident. A memorial will be organised along with funerals for those who have actually died. Counselling will also soon be made available for those who need it. I apologise for taking time to update you all, but my team and I had to deal with the fires and the explosions and then search the whole of Ryde to locate injured, deceased and infected individuals. Thankfully the wall around Ryde has not been damaged and it is thanks to the wall that this tragic incident was contained within the walls of Ryde. Once again, I am sorry for those who have suffered losses, I am sorry for taking so long to get back to you, and I am sorry for the inconvenience of being evacuated to the bunkers, but please rest assured that all decisions have been made with your safety as our first priority. Thank you." The announcement had stopped and the whole bunker filled with a tense and shocked silence. You could hear a pin drop... That was until Trudy opened her big mouth. "This is f*cking bullsh*t," snapped Trudy, "A load of gas explosions coincidentally all going off at once and killing every single person?" "Trudy, shut up!" I snapped, "People have just died. Have some f*cking respect." "Seriously though!?" said Trudy, "I mean come on. This has got conspiracy written all over it." "Trudy. Not now," said Roz, "Just not now." Trudy is such a gobby tw*t sometimes. I mean, I can see why she's suspicious of what happened. It does sound a bit odd that EVERYONE in Ryde would be killed, but I think that what we have to focus on right now is not a possible conspiracy, but the fact that thousands of people have died. The Hive is also going to go from having a handful of infected to having a sh*t load of infected.
