"And after that, I need you and Nick to investigate a murder-"

"Woah, Ellie... I- I need a break. Is that... alright with you?"

The woman blushed, "Oh, of course! You have been through a lot... Just make sure you stay close!" She chuckled nervously, and I walked up to Valentine's balcony, seeing him sitting on an old couch, his trench coat off. I sat next to him in an idle silence. He gave me a sidelong glance, "Are you okay?"

"No."

"Want something to eat?"

"...Yes..."

He chuckled, and stood up. He put his coat around my shoulders, "I'll go grab you a bowl of noodles. Stay here." I gave a nod, and he walked off. I watched over him as he went to the noodle stand, ordering me something. I watched as he chatted with some of the locals as my meal was being prepared. My mind wandered. Who had it harder? Me or him?

On one hand, my spouse was killed, and my son became a psychopath, which I had to kill.

On the other hand, Nick lost whatever family the old Nick had. He had self confliction. He was disrespected because of the non-existent 'blood' in his veins. Coolant, I believe.

So really, who had it worse? We both woke up in the future, which was traumatizing. What's that old saying? 'You're drawn to people like yourself.' Something along those lines. I watched the synth, his tie loose, as he thanked the only other trashbin in town. He walked off, fanning the bowl with one hand and balancing it in his palm. I pulled his jacket around my shoulders as he returned. He set the bowl in my lap and plopped next to me, close enough to be comfortable. I smiled as a thanks and twirled the noodles around a plastic fork. I looked to him as I took a bite, "Hold the fuck up."

He frowned, "Pardon?"

"I'm the fuck up. Hold me."

He chuckled and wrapped an arm around me. I looked to him once again, "Nick, who do you think is worse off? Me or you?"

"You, hands down." He looked at my expression and elaborated, "I mean... You just killed your own son. Sure, you saved everyone in the Commonwealth, but... you sacrificed a little bit of yourself... Didn't you?"

"Nick... you know damn well that the man I killed wasn't my son. My true son died the moment he was ripped from my spouse's arms. And what about you? You had memories erased of a brother-- your last family-- not to mention you face discrimination everyday."

He looked at his right pointer finger, bending it as he thought silently, "Why is it a competition? We've both had it rough, Partner. That's why I'm glad I have you."

I smiled, putting the empty bowl of noodles on the ground and leaning into my partner furthermore.
