I sat nervously in a chair, practically hidden in the corner of the room, my hands shaking. I clasped them together, a tear rolling down my cheek and my legs practically glued together.

We were at a small NCR camp, Boone and I. He was currently hooked up to some thing that measured his heart rate with a needle in his arm and everything. He was rough. Half of his face was badly bruised or covered in dried blood, which came from a split area on his forehead above his eyebrow. A split that would most definitely scar. His right arm (the one not connected to a bag of donated blood), kept on twitching, and his fist would clench every now and then. He kept flinching.

Suddenly, all of his muscles react. I snapped to attention, standing to my feet. I looked to his heartbeat monitor, feeling my own heart stop as the beeping suddenly combined into one long, drawn out sound. I felt like I couldn't breathe. I dropped beside him, sitting on the empty bed space next to him. I cupped his jaw, and sobbed, putting my forehead to his, "C-C'mon. I'm not letting you go that easily. Please... please don't go..."

I sat there for what felt like an entire lifetime. I couldn't breathe. I felt so empty it was unbearable. He was gone. Who was I going to travel with? Who was I going to laugh and shoot with? Who was I without Boone in my life?

I suddenly heard a small beep and was unsure whether I was hearing things or not. I looked to the heart monitor, and as soon as more beeps were heard and the line spiked, relief ran through my veins. I suddenly felt him suck in a hardy breathe before break out into a coughing fit. I pulled away to give him some space. He saw me and sat up, wrapping his arms around me and crying loudly. I'd never seen him cry. I hugged back, tears of my own rolling down my face.

I don't know how long we stayed like that.

Eventually, he pulled away. I gently lay him back down. He looked up at me, "I saw her. Carla."

My heart dropped again, "What?"

"I saw Carla. I... died. I died for a minute, and I saw Carla. She spoke to me."

"What did she say?"

"She wanted me to stay with her. She wanted me to stay... up there... with her. You should've seen her. In front of the golden gates."

I wiped my hair out of my face, "What did you do?"

He smiled a little, "I said no. In a choice between staying in heaven with Carla, or staying in this hell with you... A year ago, I was certain if my choice. But over that time..." He grabbed my hand, "You got me wrapped around your finger like a Freeside thug around a sack of caps. You know that?"

I blushed, "You... picked me? Over Carla?"

He nodded, "Yeah. I saw you... crying over me. I knew I couldn't leave you here on your own." He chuckled sadly, "If you're gonna suffer, I'm gonna suffer with you. It'll take a lot more than this to get rid of me."
