Josh's POV

"I can hear them through the bedroom wall, you know she ain't a friend at all"

Becoming homeless during my junior year of college wasn't in the cards but when my grant for housing fell through I was told I wouldn't have a dorm this year. Of course my best friend Maya was quick to offer up her boyfriend's spare bedroom. It was perfect. Except I literally hated her boyfriend.

His name was Brett, he was quarterback on the football team and a total douche bag. I only acted like I got along with him for Maya's sake but with every passing night it was getting harder and harder. It had become an internal struggle, whether the nights with having Maya locked in his bedroom were better than the ones with Stacey, a tall blonde bombshell from his statistics calls.

At least if it were Maya I would have the peace of mind that she was in happy, loving relationship but the nights with her staying over were way more frequent than Stacey's. Tonight, like most nights the endless string of moans falls from the girl's lips as the headboard of Brett's bed slams against the wall. The wall we share. I groan, grabbing my pillow and burying my face in it. The sound of my phone vibrating on the nightstand breaks me out of my pity party and I reach over to grab it.

Maya's name flashes on the screen and I have another struggle. To answer or decline...oh who am I kidding? "Hello" I answer, sitting up.

"Are you home?" she giggles.

"Um yea why?" I ask confused. It was Wednesday night, where else would I be?

"Because I've been knocking for five minutes. I know Brett's at practice but I thought we could hang out" she says brightly. My heart breaks. The only thing Brett's practicing is how to become a teenager father.

"Um just a sec" I say as I stand up, walking out of my bedroom.

"Oh god Brett" Stacey shouts. I roll my eyes as I make my way to the door, pulling it open to find Maya standing on the other side. She was wearing a sweatshirt and a pair of yoga pants with her blonde locks tied up in a loose ponytail. I furrow my eyebrows, narrowing in on the sweatshirt. I close the door behind me and laugh, pointing to the shirt.

"Isn't that mine?" I quirk an eyebrow at her.

"What?" she asks, crossing her arms over her chest. "I don't know what you're talking about. This is my sweatshirt." I laugh, shaking my head as I lean against the door.

"Yea. Okay Maya" I reply teasingly. She rolls her eyes, dropping her arms.

"Fine" she gives. "It's yours" she admits. "Why are we standing out in the hallway?"

"Let me tell you 'bout your boyfriend, he's got another girlfriend"

"It's nicer out here" I lie making her quirk an eyebrow at me.

"It's nicer out here?" she mocks me. "Josh that's ridiculous. Let me in" she insists but I move in front of the doorknob and shake my head.

"That's not a good idea sweetheart" I say seriously. Her eyes narrow as she stares at me.

"And why is that?" she demands.

I sigh, rubbing my neck. "It's just not."

"Joshua Gabriel Matthews I swear if you know something that I don't" she trails off. I look at her and break. I can't keep things from her. She doesn't deserve this. She deserves to be cared for and loved.
