Blurb:
First paragraph had me chuckling. Start and end of the prologue really keeps us hooked. The mid part is interesting, but it doesn't feel like a blurb. I would suggest providing all this information inside the story and just let out the overall basics for the story.
Moving towards the chapters,
Nice start. The short lines before the chapter were deep and meaningful, making me wonder how it will reflect in the story.
Story starts off poetically. The descriptions are beautiful.
A true and relatable line- You can't ask a pig to smell roses.
The bond between Ken and Cades is awesome. Loved how their conversation kept changing from the discrimination to dreams, to family and so much more without breaking the flow.
Descriptions are beautiful but they are taking the focus away from the story. I would suggest limiting them a little.
Chapter was understandable yet hard to follow. However, I read the following chapter, and the writing style was much easier to adapt than the first. Probably because of the increase in conversations between the characters.
Ken's bond with his mother seems cute and relatable. Fun, caring and annoying at the same time. The denial upon finding his orus was shown well. And his mother's teasing was fun to read.
I like how inanimate objects are described like they are real.
I could definitely understand Ken's nervousness while telling Cades. Although he had a suspicious look on before, which actually made me think that their friendship would break. I am at peace that it didn't. Despite the changes, they are still going well.
The way Ken is disheveled with the magic seems relatable and it is portrayed really well through actions.
The Harvesters were explained really well through the chapter. The actions and dialogues really flow well to make us understand their tradition for guests and dislike for ghosts and many more. I would suggest using this style of explanation for the other species/other people from the different areas in the starting chapters.
Tovil seems like an interesting character. Hopefully he is there to stay.
Ken's orus seems amusing to say the least. I am waiting for the day they actually interact.
Using the word 'It' for his magic was a great idea. It showed his denial to accept magic as a part of him.
Looks like there is another one with a different kind of magic. It seems Ken is going to meet many interesting and intriguing characters in his journey.
*****
Characterization is good. The bonds between them connect well. And I also enjoyed the dialogue flow between everyone. Loved the character of Ken's mother. There was so much pain, but she handled it like a rock. And the way she explained everything to Ken was also beautiful.
Writing style is beautiful, but a little tiring for me at the start. The story isn't based on a regular world. The writing style would have worked for such a story or a fantasy story with minimal changes. But when there are so many new concepts, new words, and new types of people/magic users to understand and remember, I feel it is best to keep the language simple. Having said that, it did get easier for me to read the latter chapters when explanations started getting involved in the story.
Plot is unique and interesting. It kept me going. The chapters flow smoothly at a steady pace. It isn't too fast nor too slow. There were a few confusions at first but they were slowly explained as the chapters passed by.
There's a small typo in the first chapter. Apart from that, everything is perfectly written.
Last words,
I enjoyed the concept of the story. Even loved the bonds and characters. There were many interesting, emotional, sarcastic moments. Enjoyed them all. Descriptions were beautiful, but I am not a fan of too much detailing(just a personal preference).
The writing style wasn't of my preference, but I am sure that the book will surely attract the right type of readers who do love this style more.
Thank you for choosing me. Keep writing!!
