My Way

     I squeezed my eyes shut, letting the dread take over me for a moment.

"Oiiiiii! Misakiiiiii!" Luffy said, making my heart drop.

    "Oh, Luffy... I've been looking for you." I said, looking at the ground.

    "Yeah?" Luffy said, his grin widening as he rocked forward on his toes with excitement. "You know, Kramer is going to be here soon."

    "I don't need to wait until Kramer comes to talk, Lu." I said, taking his hand. "Can we sit down?"

    "Why're you being so formal, M'?" Luffy snickered. "Look, I know we broke up... and I know I keep pushing those boundaries and I'm sorry about that. But you don't have to —"

   "Luffy." I said, making him pause. "Sit down with me. Please."

    He gulped and nodded, sitting down on the bench that was nearby. I sat down next to him and sighed. This... hurts...

"Misaki... I —"

"Luffy, I can't do this." I said. I seriously can't do this.

"What do you mean?" He said, his head tilting.

"This! You... me... this little dance we keep doing." It's killing me. "I don't want you to kiss me." I said, looking at him firmly. "I don't want you to hold my hand." I want that more than anything. "I don't want you to put your arm around me... I don't want to..." I gulped, my eyes burning as I blinked back the tears. "I don't want to be with you anymore. At all."

Luffy held his breath for what seemed like an eternity. Then, as he exhaled, he said one simple word. "Why?"

"I... I can't..." I stuttered, looking at the ground.

"That's not good enough!" Luffy said, standing up and facing me. "You can't just throw this all away without telling me why!"

"BECAUSE!" I snapped, still looking down. Luffy grabbed me by the shoulders, yanking me off the bench.

"BECAUSE WHY?!?!" He yelled, tears threatening to spill out. "You have to tell me why! I've done nothing to make you hate me!"

"I don't hate you! I just don't want to be with you anymore!" I snapped. I can't. I can't tell you why. I can't even come up with a fake reason.

"If you don't hate me, then why can't you be with me?! I know you love me!" He said, his hands running down to mine and pulling them to his chest. "My heart. My heart wants this. Yours does too! I know it!"

"No!" I said, yanking my hands away and putting them over my ears.

"This isn't you, Misaki! Tell me this is you! You can't! Because you want this!"

"No! No no no no—"

"— Look, don't say no just to make me go away, or make me stop talking! Only say no, if you really don't want to be with me!"

"NO!" I snapped, yanking my hands away from his. Luffy stood up straight. He looked at me calmly, tears pouring down his face. He looked like a feather could knock him over.

"Do you want to stay on the ship?"

"NO!" I yelled, tears pouring down my face. My voice didn't even sound like mine anymore. It was hoarse and... panicked. My knees felt weak, as I realized I was at the point of no return now.
