Just one second

In my old world, anything could change in even just one second. In the world of one piece, one second felt like an eternity. If we measured a moment in just one second, you would miss everything. That's why you had to be fast. That's why you had to break a second down, even if by the hundredth. Or else you could miss even your own death.

One millisecond.

The barrel of the gun felt cold as it pressed up into my diaphragm.

Two milliseconds.

At that angle... my hands were full. One with the devil fruit and the other snatched by the prick in the cheesy black suit.

Three milliseconds.

The gun was so close. I couldn't duck. I couldn't jump. No matter how fast I was, all I had was a split second to get my hands free, move the gun, and get out of the way.

Four milliseconds. I could hear the soft click as his finger squeezed over the trigger. No matter the training. No matter how fast. No matter how strong. I was caught. Caught off guard, and helpless. I should have known.

  Five milliseconds.

Despite it being hopeless, I tried. Despite the milliseconds ticking, despite there only being a moment left, I tried. I didn't even try to rip my hand away from him, opting to drop the devil fruit and grab at the gun with my other hand, trying to angle it away from myself as I leaned in the other—

*BANG*

My ears rang like no tomorrow. My jaw dropped. I gasped as I reeled backward, the air knocked out of me as I stared wide eyed at the man standing in front of me. My hair got in the way as I stared on, flying up in front of me as I fell. I watched as he grimaced and aimed again.

*BANG*

I shut my eyes, waiting for the searing pain that came with a bullet. The hot metal ripping through my flesh. The brunt force of falling heavily to the ground. But it never came, as a familiar set of arms snatched me up before I could ever hit the ground.

   "Luffy!" I said breathlessly.

"Fucking STRAWHAT!" Chodely growled as he reached up with the gun to take another shot, missing as Luffy moved away in gear 2.

"Hey!" He said, smiling at me as he hugged me close. "I fucking knew it, didn't I?" He teased, sticking his tongue out at me. I smiled and hugged around his neck, burying my face in his shoulder as he touched down, facing the prick that stood before us. "Yo! Detective Dickly!"

"It's Dick Chodely!" I corrected. Luffy shrugged, laughing at my nickname.

"I like that better." He chuckled before getting serious. "Care to explain yourself?

"Care to meet my friends?" Dick Chodely boasted, snapping his fingers.

    ...

    ...

He frowned, and snapped his fingers again. "What the..."

"You lookin for this guy?" Zoro yelled, tossing a sniper from the rooftop. "Guy was a wimp."

"I got this one too." Robin said, the sweetest smile placed over her lips as her extra hands dragged another man over the ledge. Chodely grimaced, pulling a transponder snail out of his pocket as the crew began emerging from the shadows, tossing subordinate after subordinate down to the ground. I noticed Sanji and my mom were missing and thanked the heavens that they thought ahead to protect her.
