Cheering up

AN: Another original chapter! This one is a bit wholesome and will show another hobby Irene is interested in (That Old Version readers might've forgot about) and her still close friendship with Miyuki. Hope you enjoy it!

Narrator pov. At the Kuroba house~

As expected, Kuroba had started to scold Irene when they both got home but he stopped when Miyuki shook her head at him while Irene just went upstairs to her room, feeling completely guilty and scared.

She tried to act like nothing was wrong during dinner at the Nakamori house, but when that didn't work, she went with the excuse that she was worried about Haibara.

Thankfully, school wouldn't start until two more days, so she didn't have to worry about trying to hide anything from Edogawa yet.

Kuroba tried to reassure her a bit, but it didn't work.

And the next day, after breakfast, Miyuki came in and went to where Irene was shutting herself in upstairs.

"Sakura-chan... You know you can't just stay here for the rest of your life, right? You're turning into Miyano-chan like that." Miyuki said as she looked at the bundle on the bed.

Irene sighed, lifting her head up to look at her, "But... I don't know how safe it is to leave, and I can't get over how that's my fault."

"Sakura-chan." Miyuki's voice turned stern which made Irene blink up at her, "Stop wallowing in what-ifs. It's Vermouth. Yeah, she's a psycho and definitely wouldn't hesitate to kill you, but out of all the members, you have a way to protect yourself from her. You know her weakness, remember?"

"... Kudo-kun?" she answered hesitantly and Miyuki nodded before replying, "Yeah, Shinichi-kun. You don't have to tell him yet if you don't feel ready, but just staying close to him will keep you safe. Besides, Vermouth isn't like Gin, she likes to have fun before killing any target, so you'll be fine."

Irene did seem to take the words to heart, but she hasn't gotten out of bed yet. Miyuki relaxed regardless at the slight progress, smiling as she decided to start the next step of her plan, "Hey Sakura-chan."

Irene looked back up at her, tilting her head which she took as the sign to continue "When Sherlock is bored, he begs Watson to give him any problems to work on, the most abstruse cryptogram or the most intricate analysis, what do you think Watson says?"

Irene blinked, thinking about it, before saying, "Well, Watson just tells him to be patient or gives him some puzzle to solve?"

Miyuki snorts before shaking her head, "Nope. He says (Alright Holmes. I will give you an income tax return.)" She grinned a bit as she watched Irene process.

"... Pfft-" Finally Irene lets out a small giggle, covering her mouth.

(Yeah, I found this joke on the internet when I searched up "Sherlock jokes for Sherlockians" so...)

Miyuki grinned proudly at getting her shrunken childhood friend to laugh a bit and decided to add one more joke, "Holmes breaks the statue of Napoleon and Captain Lestrade asks Watson why he did and Watson answers (Sherlock is an Alexander the Great fan)."

This time, Irene couldn't keep it in as she laughed more openly, her laughter reaching outside the room where Kuroba smiled at hearing it.

Miyuki relaxed more in relief and asked, "Feeling better now?"

Irene calmed down and nodded, smiling a bit, "Un, I'm better. Arigato."

Miyuki then sat down next to her, "Well, now that you're in the mood, I decided to get you something since I missed like, a lot of your birthdays." she started to take something out of her sports bag as Irene looked at her in surprise, "Don't worry, it's just one gift since I know it would be too much to get a lot."

She took out a long thin box and handed it to her, smiling, "Open it, Sakura-chan."

Irene slowly opened it to reveal a pink flute with a Sakura design on it, she gasped in surprise and delight as she looked back up at Miyuki in disbelief.

Miyuki smiled and explained, "I heard that you didn't exactly have anything except your phone when you got here, which means you lost your flute, and I found out that no one here gave you a new one so... I decided to do the honors, this time finding one that's most definitely yours with the design."

Irene blinked before smiling widely and hugging her, "Thank you, thank you, thank you!"

Miyuki laughed and hugged back, "You're welcome Sakura-chan."

After a bit more, Irene stopped the hug and picked up the flute bag, taking the instrument out of it as she started to feel its carvings and smooth surface.

Miyuki watched with a smile before looking to the ceiling and saying, "There's another reason though." she continued once Irene looked back at her, "I missed your flute playing from back in the orphanage."

Irene blinked as Miyuki looked back at her now, smiling, "So, do you mind playing it again? It's better than just letting yourself grow rusty."

Irene smiled and nodded before pulling the flute up to her mouth and starting to play a gentle smooth melody.

The soft sounds traveled through the house and Kuroba blinked in surprise before smiling and letting himself listen.

Miyuki stayed silent, not surprised in the least that Irene didn't suddenly get worse at the flute, as she closed her eyes and allowed herself to listen to the sounds that displayed the shrunken brunette's now better mood.

And this was how Miyuki succeeded in cheering up Irene.

Sorry if it felt short, rushed, or something, but this is just another chapter that shows the friendship between those two and how Miyuki always knows how to cheer Irene up. ^^

And sorry if the jokes felt cringy, as I said, I found them on the internet.
