The kids and Edogawa came back after finding nothing in the hot spring inn.
Agasa asked if they were ready to give up, and all the real kids said yes, but Haibara stopped Agasa from explaining, "Matte, Hakase! There's one person who still hasn't given up."
Irene smiled as they all glanced at Edogawa, who was looking at his notes.
Later at night, Irene and Haibara made their dinner together, easily keeping pace with each other.
Haibara then decided to say, "Thank you, for stopping me from going after Kudo-kun that night."
It took a minute for Irene to realize what night she was talking about, a slight shiver going down her spine as Vermouth's face and words from then flashed through her head.
She took a deep breath before nodding and giving a smile, "No problem. I did tell you I would protect you with Kudo-kun." She looked away before Haibara could notice her expression shifting nervously.
"You got me interested in you... As a target."
'Don't think about her, don't think about her-' She told herself mentally, focusing on cooking, which helped the memory fade from her mind.
Unbeknownst to her, Haibara did notice a bit, and she raised an eyebrow.
After dinner, Irene went with Haibara and Agasa to check on the beetles again. Irene took the time to look around the shrine as she asked, "Ne, were you with Hakase here last night during the festival too, Haibara-san?"
Haibara nodded, "Yeah. Like Hakase said, it was beautiful. And we did have to wait until they were done to plant the beetles here."
Irene replied, "He~eh?" She smiled, "Wish I could have seen it."
They came back to the tents in time to see the kids and Edogawa go back to the hot spring, looking at each other before following them.
When Mitsuhiko suggested going to wash off in the hot spring, the two girls and Agasa stepped over with Haibara saying, "It's no use going to the inn. There's nothing there."
Agasa added, "You guys have to try and think a little harder." Irene giggled at the obvious happiness in his tone at having gotten the kids and Edogawa stumped with his code for once.
When the kids asked him to just tell them where the treasure was, Haibara said, "Sure, we'll tell you. Only if a certain someone gives up."
Irene shrugged helplessly when the kids looked at her for help, then they turned to Edogawa, who got a certain mail just then and left to make a call.
