The sun shone brightly in the afternoon sky, as Damien Haas sat in the passenger's seat of his best friend/brother, and business partner Ian Hecox's car. They were headed to a surprise vacation that Ian had set up, he was always bugging Damien to relax, calling him a workaholic. So, Ian had packed and set everything up, refusing to tell Damien anything and Damien hated surprises. An hour later, Damien had fallen asleep, but woke up as Ian pulled into a long driveway and parked. Damien sat up and looked around confused, they got out of the car and Damien realized where they were and spoke.
"Really, Ian? A Dude Ranch? Do we look like we'd have fun here?"
"Actually, yeah, Dames, I do. Now quit complaining and start relaxing." Ian replied.
"Fine, but you owe me big for this, Hecox." Damien agreed annoyed.
An hour later, they had met up with their guide a cowgirl named Courtney Miller, and were settled into their room. Ian had gone to set up some activities for them, wanting them to have the full cowboy experience. Damien decided to give it a chance, so he went outside and began looking around bored, until he came to a corral. Inside the corral, there was a beautiful black, obviously wild stallion tied to a pole in the center. Damien got closer and watched as the stallion wouldn't let any of the five, huge cowboys anywhere near him, while a sixth cowboy stood off to the side alone watching them. Damien was curious about the sixth cowboy, he just stood there leaning against the corral, chewing on a long piece of hay, as he watched the others try and fail to tame the wild beast. After the other cowboys failed to get close to the stallion, the sixth cowboy approached it. 15 minutes later, he had the stallion under control, Damien was sure he wouldn't after the stallion threw the cowboy off, causing him to hurt his left knee. He couldn't see the cowboy's face, but he was drawn to the mysterious man, he watched him as he pet the stallion on the nose, talking softly to the animal.
"Here you are, man. What are you doing?" Ian asked smiling, as he patted Damien on the back.
"Courtney, who is that?" Damien asked pointing at the cowboy who was still petting the stallion.
"The guy by the horse?" Courtney asked, Damien nodded. "That's our best cowboy, been here from the beginning. His name is Shayne Topp, he's a good guy, had a rough life, he's great with animals, people...not so much. He's a loner, no friends, and really hates people from the city coming here to be as he calls them weekend cowboys. He calls them Cityslickers and my advice to you...stay away from him."
"Hey, Court, who are they?" A sexy voice spoke from behind them.
"Hey, Shayne." Courtney greeted him smiling, as they turned to face him, Damien froze, Shayne was freaking gorgeous. "Let me introduce our newest visitors, Ian Hecox and Damien Haas. Guys, this is Shayne Topp."
"Nice to meet you, Shayne." Ian said smiling holding out his hand for Shayne to shake.
"Great, more Cityslickers." Shayne said looking at them with disgust, Ian quickly put his hand down.
"You were great out there, Shayne. What you did with that stallion was amazing." Damien said smiling.
"I've got work to do." Shayne said, as walked away, Damien was the only one who noticed that Shayne look back at them.
**Days Later**:
Days passed and Damien was actually enjoying himself, with Courtney's help he and Ian learned how to be cowboys. While he did, Damien couldn't stop thinking of Shayne, he'd see him around the ranch house and yard and would notice Shayne sneaking glances at him, but they never had the chance to talk. Damien tried to talk to him, but he just wouldn't, Shayne would always talk shit before walking away. Damien though refused to give up and wanted to impress Shayne, so he worked extra hard and picked everything up quickly.
Finally, having enough of being ignored, a week later, Damien decided to ask Shayne for tips on his riding. So, he headed to the barn and like usual, found Shayne with the animals, of course, he ignored Damien refusing to help him. He wouldn't give up though, he just needed a plan, while he thought he went up to the stallion; who usually only let Shayne near him, and began petting him. Shayne was shocked how Damien connected with the horse, he would never admit it, but he was very attracted to Damien and impressed with his never-give-up attitude.
"Alright, Haas, you want my help? Let's ride." Shayne said, startling Damien.
"What? Now?" Damien asked, watching as Shayne began getting two horses ready.
"That's right. Now's your time to impress me, show me what you've got, Cityslicker." Shayne said smiling.
"Let's go." Damien said, as they got onto their horses and left.
They rode for a while, racing each other; sometimes Damien took the lead, and other times Shayne did, they were having a great time. They decided to stop at a small lake, so they got off their horses and sat down by the water and talked. Shayne for the first time in his life truly felt comfortable around someone, he felt safe, and their attraction grew stronger. A little later, they decided to head back, as they got up to leave Damien slipped and almost fell into the water, but Shayne caught him before he could. Holding Damien close, they stared into each other's eyes, neither moved until Shayne smiled and pulled away telling Damien they should go back. Damien hid his disappointment, and agreed, as he passed him, he stole Shayne's cowboy hat and got onto his horse.
The ride back was full of flirting and talking, Damien was so happy, until suddenly, the horses got spooked by a fox. Shayne quickly took control and grabbed Damien's horse before he could be bucked off. Before Shayne could keep his own horse from rearing up, it did throwing him off, he landed on the ground hard on his back. Damien quickly got off his horse and rushed to him, he was so scared as he knelt by Shayne's unmoving body. Panicking, Damien took out his phone and called Ian telling him what happened, all he could then was wait as he held Shayne's hand.
**Later**:
It had been a few hours since Shayne was brought to the hospital; thankfully, none of his injuries were serious or life-threatening, he broke three ribs and his left leg, and had lots of bruises and a concussion. Damien was so relieved and after finding out he'd be okay he sent Ian and Courtney back to the ranch, while he stayed with Shayne. Damien sat by Shayne's bed holding his hand when he opened his eyes and saw Damien, they smiled at each other before Shayne spoke groggily.
"What happened, Cityslicker?"
"You were thrown from your horse trying to save me, Cowboy." Damien answered smiling.
"Are you okay?" Shayne asked concerned.
"I'm fine, thanks to you."
"Well, I did it cause it was the right thing to do and cause I...I like you." Shayne said whispering the last part, as blushing he looked away.
"What was that, Cowboy? I didn't quite hear you." Damien teased smiling.
"I could repeat myself, Cityslicker, or I could do this instead." Shayne said smirking, before he kissed Damien.
"Looks like us Cityslickers aren't so bad after all huh, Cowboy?" Damien asked smiling.
"Maybe not, but what the hell is up with your friend Ian?" Shayne asked, as they laughed. "How can somebody be so damn hyper all the time?"
"I'll explain later, Cowboy, it's a complicated Cityslicker thing." Damien teased.
"Making fun of me huh, after I saved your life?" Shayne mocked, pretending to be hurt by Damien's words.
"Hey, it's another Cityslicker thing." Damien said, as they both laughed again.
"Shut up and kiss me." Shayne said, before they kissed.
