Ian paced the living room of the house he shared with Damien, after filling out the paperwork and having background checks done over the last few days they received a call yesterday from their case manager; a kind, helpful woman named Catherine Sanders, to tell them they had been approved for adoption and they could begin the process of finding their child; after talking both Ian and Damien agreed to start looking at the Orphanage. Today, they were going with Shayne and Courtney to meet the kids and hopefully find their son or daughter.
"Ready to go, babe?" Damien asked, as he came into the house with Shayne and Courtney.
"Uh, yeah." Ian answered smiling.
"Okay, let's go, I'll drive." Shayne said smiling too.
**Later**:
20 minutes later, they were waiting outside the Orphanage for Catherine to arrive. Ian was nervously biting his nails, Damien watched him silently, he knew how nervous Ian was and was so proud of him for facing his fears. He knew in his heart that Ian was going to be the greatest father any child could ask for, he just wished Ian could see it too.
"Sorry I'm late, work has been crazy today." Catherine said smiling, as she joined them.
"Don't worry about it, Catherine these are two of our best friends, Shayne Topp and Courtney Miller." Damien said smiling, introducing them.
"It's nice to meet you, thank you for helping our brothers." Courtney said smiling, as they shook her hand.
"It's my pleasure, I love helping families come together." She replied smiling, as she touched Ian and Damien's arms. "So, you guys ready to find your son or daughter?"
"Yep." Ian answered, as he took Damien's hand.
"Okay, let's go then."
An hour later, Ian stood leaning against the wall, watching as Damien, Courtney, and Shayne talked to Catherine. They had been through the entire Orphanage and met with some of the kids, but so far he hadn't connected with any of them. He felt horrible knowing how badly Damien wanted this to happen, he decided to go for a walk outside, needing a break to clear his head. As he wandered around, watching the kids play, he sighed before he sat on a bench and stared at the sky.
"Hi!" A little voice spoke from beside him.
"Hi." Ian replied smiling, as he looked at the little boy of about four. "My name's Ian, what's yours?"
"Zander and I'm this many." The little boy replied proudly, as he held up four fingers.
"Why aren't you playing with the other kids?" Ian asked, as Zander sat on the bench beside him.
"Cause they hate me." Zander answered sadly. "They call me weird."
"Well, I don't think you're weird, wanna play with me?" Ian asked, his heart breaking for the sweet, little boy, who reminded Ian a lot of himself.
"Really?" Zander asked smiling.
"Yep."
"Yay!" Zander yelled, as he got up and grabbed Ian's hand, before he dragged him to the playground.
While Ian played with Zander, Damien, Courtney, Shayne, and Catherine came looking for him. They couldn't find him anywhere, until suddenly they heard him laughing and followed it and found him playing with a cute, little boy.
"Wow, that's incredible!" Catherine said quietly, as they watched them.
"What is?" Damien asked.
"You see that little boy with Ian?"
"Yeah, what about him?" Shayne asked.
"Well, that's Zander; he's been here for two years. None of the other kids play with him; they think he's weird because he's so quiet and extremely smart for his age. The same with prospective parents, it breaks my heart, he's such a sweet, little boy, he's just extremely shy. It's incredible how he took to Ian like that!"
"Ian's incredible!" Damien said smiling, proudly.
"Come on, let's go meet him." Catherine said smiling.
They watched as Ian picked Zander up, before swinging him around, dizzy, Ian fell to the ground on his back, holding Zander close protecting him as they fell, both laughing.
"Ian?" Damien said smiling, as Ian sat up, while Zander climbed all over him.
"Hey, guys." Ian said smiling. "Alright, I give, little man, I give." He said, as he stood up, holding Zander.
"Who's your new friend, Ian?" Courtney asked smiling.
"Damien, Courtney, Shayne, this is Zander." Ian announced smiling.
"Hi, Zander." Damien greeted him smiling.
"Hi! You're tall!" Zander asked in shock, seeing Damien. "Wow, you're strong just like Superman!" He added, noticing Shayne. "Did someone color on your hair?" He asked noticing Courtney's light pink hair. "Mr. Ian, can they play with us?"
"What do ya say, guys?" Ian asked, winking at them.
"Let's go!" Shayne agreed.
"I've got some things to do inside, so I'll leave you guys to play." Catherine said smiling, before she left them alone.
For the next two hours the four of them played with Zander, all four of them fell in love with him and knew that he was it; he was the perfect fit for their little family. When it was time for them to leave, none of them wanted to go, but promised to come visit him again very soon and call when they couldn't. After hugs, they left and stood in the parking lot with Catherine and told her their decision. So happy, she told them to meet her at her office to start the paperwork.
**Later**:
That night at home, Ian was in a great mood, he was still scared about messing up, but after meeting Zander he knew he couldn't just walk away. He changed into some comfortable clothes, while Damien, Courtney, and Shayne made them coffee, Ian sat down on the edge of the bed and began looking at the pictures of them with Zander on his phone.
Damien, Courtney, and Shayne went back into the living room, Damien couldn't wipe the smile off his face since they signed the adoption papers starting the process. All four of them knew that it was going to be a long, hard road with many twists, turns, and stops along the way. He also knew that whatever they went through along the way would be worth it in the end when Zander came home to be with them forever.
