When Loki finally opened his eyes, he discovered that he had been shackled to some great stone pillar. His armor and his weapons had been removed, which angered him greatly. Loki concentrated all his magical energies on the chains, vaguely recalling the time when Mand'e kidnapped him. The metal rattled, but did not give. Mortal magic was binding him there, but he was an Asgardian, trained by Frigga of the Vanir, and Volva of the Mystical Nine. He could break a petty earthly spell. Loki used all the power he had, so much that his eyes started turning green.
Finally, the chains broke. Loki twisted the shackles off his wrists and looked around. It was so dark in there he could not see his hand before his face. A whisper was heard at his elbow and he jumped, swinging his fist. This time, he did hit something. Cold flesh gave beneath his hand, and there was a cry of pain. Loki blasted fire from his hand, and he incinerated something. A scream of agony filled the air and for a brief moment, Loki saw eyes. They were filled with misery and torment, but only for an instant. Loki turned and summoned his scepter, Emerald Heart, and said in a loud voice, "Light of Odin!" Golden light filled his prison from top to bottom, revealing a grisly line of skeletons hanging in chains from the rafters. Some were pristine white, having been bare of flesh for years; but others were more recent. Loki could see dried blood and decay on them.
He wrinkled his nose and thought, What creatures could do that to their own kind? Even the most barbaric of all the Nine Realms, the giants of Jotunheim, never treated their own this way. Loki raised his scepter and slammed it on the ground, sending a wave all along the room, opening a stone door at the end. Loki walked up the stairs and entered a long stone hallway. There were no windows, so Loki guessed he was in an underground vault somewhere. The hallway before him was long, dark, cold, and empty. Loki raised his scepter over his head and shouted, "Come Vlad! You who are called the Impaler! Face one who is your better!" The echo of Loki's challenge rang through the hallway, reverberating off the walls and coming back to him. That was when he heard a laugh. It was heartless and cruel, as if the person enjoyed watching people suffer. Loki had been in plenty of battles and had seen many dangerous enemies, so the laugh did not faze him. Instead he called out again, saying the laughter had no courage to face him.
There was another laugh before an eerie reply, "I am not afraid of you. But a battle is not what I crave. It's your blood!" Loki had heard that cannibals had existed on Midgard, but he had never heard of people who drank blood! Loki turned around and that was when he saw a dark essence at the other end of the hallway. At first, it did not take shape, but when it did, Loki's heart almost stopped in his chest!
