Part 1

Loki straightened up and then carefully turned his head from side to side.  The physician smiled as Loki demonstrated that his neck was in working order.  “There you are your highness, it’s as if nothing has happened,” the doctor said as he tossed the brace into the fire.

“My back and atrophied muscles disagree,” Loki responded in a rather cold tone of voice.  The physician smiled nervously and then bowed to Loki.  Once he left the room, Loki looked at himself in the mirror.  There was a mark on his neck from the brace that would hopefully go away eventually.  Loki was just rubbing it when the door to the room was thrown open.  Thor was standing there, a bright smile on his face.

“Brother, you’re out of the brace!” Thor exclaimed loudly.  Loki nodded but was not given time to answer, for Thor ran to him and embraced him.  Loki felt like his ribs were being crushed.

“If you don’t have care, I’ll need a brace for my ribs and spine,” Loki pointed out.

“Sorry!  I’m just so glad that you’re out of that brace,” Thor said with a smile as he let go of Loki.  ‘More like he’s glad he doesn’t have to wait on me hand and foot,’ Loki thought to himself.  “This means that you’ll be able to make an appearance at the Banquet of Realms,” Thor announced grandly.  Loki cocked his head to one side and raised an eyebrow.  “Oh, I guess Mother and Father neglected to tell you.  We’re hosting the Banquet of Realms this time around.  We’re both old enough to attend.  The guests of honor will be the Light Elves from Alfheim.  Father says I have to pay special attention to the Princess of the Light Elves.”

“Aren’t you a little young to be thinking about marriage?” Loki asked as he and Thor walked out of the room.  Thor shrugged and dragged his feet on the stone absentmindedly.  Loki looked hard at him and started smirking.  Thor noticed and frowned immediately.  Loki started to pretend his was kissing somebody, and then he altered his voice to make it sound like a girl’s.  “Oh Thor!  What a cutie you are!  I’ve never seen such golden locks, and those eyes.  But when will you grow into your nose?”  Thor bopped Loki in the back of the head, but the Prince of Mischief still snickered.

“You’re just jealous that girls won’t acknowledge you yet,” Thor said as he walked away.  Loki stopped and stared after his retreating figure.

He grinned wickedly and said quietly to himself, “That was probably not the best thing to say to me, of all people.”
